Is able to ethically create and archive fieldwork.

It is important and beneficial to capture elements of language and culture, including the arts, for research, posterity, and preservation purposes. The EthnoArts Consultant should be able to make audio and video recordings with available equipment and store them in archives. He or She can abide by ethical research standards, such as always obtaining Informed Consent and carefully considering (along with the performers or interviewees) how media will be licensed, shared, and distributed. Equipping community members to do this for themselves is also included in this.

Audiovisual recording

No Competency:
1. Learn how to use a smartphone to create good-quality recordings
Has knowledge about:
1. Audio and Video Techniques for Fieldworkers course. This course prepares students to record, edit, archive, and share audio and video recordings of linguistic and cultural data, including recordings of artistic performances that will support their analysis, documentation, and publishing. (NOTE: course currently unavailable)
2. Take part in IT or A/V training workshops organized by IMS, partner organizations, or local entities.
Can do with Assistance:
1. Capture live performances with the help of a team, making multiple types of audio/video recordings.
Can do independently:
1. Write academically about fieldwork and the documented materials.

Archiving

No Competency:
1. Learn about and explore REAP, and install the RAMP software.
Has knowledge about:
1. Take organized field notes.
2. Organize audiovisual recordings.
Can do with Assistance:
1. Store recordings in multiple places including archiving
2. Submit archives to REAP
Can do independently:
1. Assist others in using REAP
2. Assist others in archiving their work

Ethics

No Competency:
1. Learn about IRBs (Institutional Review Boards) and how they function.
2. Learn about Creative Commons
Has knowledge about:
1. Include informed consent in all fieldwork
