Doing research is foundational to ethnoarts. Ethnographic research is necessary for engaging with communities and projects. Knowledge of their culture and artistic expressions is essential.

Browse the University of Pennsylvania's extensive website about ethnography and find some ethnographies to read.
Has knowledge about:
Take the course Research Methods in World Arts
Study/compare varying applications of research methodologies, either in an approved course or under consultant supervision; understand values and applications of each.
Can do with Assistance:
Help teach a research methods course or workshop.
Regularly read research papers, ethnographies, and journals.
Can do independently:

Keep a regular reading schedule; continue to extend your personal understanding of ethnoarts research and applications and concepts.

Take an Introduction to Ethnoarts course, such as the Basic Ethnoarts Course at Payap University.
Attend an Arts for a Better Future
Learn about Participatory Methods for Engaging Communities (PMEC) and Adult Education Methods
Read about Identity-Based Community Development
Has knowledge about:
Work with a community to help them create their own ICAL (Initial Community Arts List) or similar documentation.
Can do with Assistance:
Train community members in research methods, or help them get training.
Facilitate community members presenting and sharing about their culture and artistic expressions.
Support, encourage, and provide a platform for community sharing and showcasing research
Can do independently:
Describe a Community's Arts
No Competency:
Observe a community and its events and take notes. We recommend using the 3-column method (described in the article "The Autogenic Interviewing Style".
Has knowledge about:
Actively engage in activities that will enable interaction with those from cultures other than one's own.
Can do with Assistance:
Write a CAP (Community Arts Profile)
Publish an article or present about a community's arts.
Participate in an internship or mentoring relationship with an Arts Specialist or Consultant
Can do independently:
Academic publications or presentations about research in journals and at conferences.
Submit research to REAP.
